Stocks drop back on mixed US jobs figures

LONDON (AP) ? A mixed U.S. jobs report took the edge off global stock markets Friday as it suggested growth in the world's largest economy is not accelerating as quickly as some had hoped.

The U.S. economy added a net 162,000 jobs in July, the fewest since March and below analyst expectations for a rise of 183,000. The previous two months' gains, meanwhile, were revised down.

The hiring was nevertheless strong enough to lower the unemployment rate to a 4 ? -year low of 7.4 percent, from 7.6 percent. Forecasts were for a more modest dip to 7.5 percent.

Paul Ashworth, analyst at Capital Economics, said that taken as whole, the report "isn't going to stop the Fed from reducing its monthly asset purchases at September's meeting."

Europe lost its early gains to trade lower, with Germany's DAX down 0.1 percent at 8,403.20 and France's CAC 40 sliding the same rate to 4,038.96. Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.5 percent at 6,652.11 as Royal Bank of Scotland shares shed 4.2 percent on disappointing earnings.

U.S. stocks were poised to fall on the open. Dow futures lost 0.1 percent to 15,535 while the broader S&P 500 futures dropped almost 0.1 percent to 1,699.70.

The drop may in part be due to the fact that markets had risen this week on upbeat data from the U.S. So the mixed figures on Friday were a good opportunity for investors to cash in on the recent gains.

In Asia, markets ended higher. Japan's Nikkei 225 index surged 3.3 percent to 14,466.16, with export shares boosted by a weakening yen. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.5 percent to 22,190.97 while in mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index rose less than 0.1 percent to 2,029.42.

South Korea's Kospi was up 0.1 percent and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 climbed 1.1 percent.

Asian markets had been buoyed by a survey of Chinese industry showing manufacturing activity unexpectedly ticked up in July.

Corporate earnings, meanwhile, were mostly upbeat in the region.

Shares in Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. rose 4.2 percent after posting first-half profit that was up nearly a quarter over the year before. Sony Corp. rose 0.7 percent after the Japanese electronics giant returned to profit in the January-June period. Toyota reported a sharp rise in profits.

Benchmark crude for August delivery was down 66 cents to $107.23 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.86 on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3269 from $1.3226 late Thursday. The dollar fell to 99.17 Japanese yen from 99.49 yen.

London-based offices and rebranding waste of money for charities, public say

Almost three in four people have said that London-based offices and rebranding are a waste of money for charities, an nfpSynergy poll of 1,002 adults has shown.

The poll was carried out as part of nfpSynergy's Charity Awareness Monitor, which surveys a representative sample of adults in Britain. Of those surveyed, 74% felt that London-based offices for charities were a "somewhat" or "very" wasteful expenditure, with just 4% saying they were "fairly" worthwhile, and the rest saying they were unsure.

Rebranding recieved a similar response, with 72% of people saying it was wasteful for charities to spend money on changing their name, logo or look, and just 9% saying they felt it was worthwhile.

Joe Saxton, founder of nfpSynergy, said: "London offices make complete sense for many charities, so they need to be honest and proactive about the benefits. Being in London provides a much better pool of staff to recruit from and the small savings outside London would be a false economy."

More than half (62%) of those surveyed said they would feel confident that a charity spends donations well if staff did not travel in first class and 55% of respondents said they would feel confident if the organisation was mostly ran by volunteers. Of those surveyed, 51% said that if nobody in the organisation was paid more than ?50,000 a year that would increasse their confidence in the charity.

In addition, close to one in five (23%) said that they would have more confidence in a charity if staff paid for their own Christmas party, while 9% felt that staff would need to work for free one day a month for them to feel confident in a charity's spending.

"Paying someone more than ?50,000 and ?100,000 [makes sense for charities]," Joe Saxton said. "If that person brings a skillset, a breadth of experience and other benefits, be proactive and tell the world about it. I think every major charity can justify paying their chief executive over ?100,000.

"What charities need to remember is that if London offices or ?100,000 salaries are worthwhile, they need to scream and shout about why. The sector needs to talk about these issues now, not hope that nobody notices what they are doing."

Online tools and lobbying recieved a more positive response, with 70% of respondents saying they felt that spending money on a website was worthwhile and over half of those surveyed saying that lobbying government and other organisations (58%), as well as advertising (67%), were worthwhile.

In addition, 48% believed that producing a magazine to update supporters on work that had been done was a worthwhile expenditure for charities.

Eagles Receiver Won?t Get Add?l Punishment From NFL For Using N-Word

PHILADELPHIA (CBSMiami) ? Former Florida Gators wide receiver Riley Cooper will not face additional punishment from the NFL after a tape caught the Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver using a racial slur while at a concert.

The story surrounding Cooper started out with a YouTube video that was picked up by several sports blogs, most notably Deadspin.com. In the video, Cooper said at one point that he ?would jump that fence and fight every n***** here.? Deadspin reported Cooper was upset over being denied backstage access at a Kenny Chesney concert.

The video quickly went viral and within a short time, Cooper issued an apology and revealed that he was fined a ?good amount of money? by the Eagles.

?I am so ashamed and disgusted with myself,? Cooper wrote. ?I want to apologize. I have been offensive?I owe an apology to the fans and to this community. I am so ashamed, but there are no excuses. What I did was wrong and I will accept the consequences.?

However, he will remain on the Eagles roster, at least for the present time because the team needs him to fill the void left when Jeremy Maclin was injured.

The Eagles described themselves as ?shocked and appalled? by Cooper?s comments.

?This sort of behavior or attitude from anyone has no role in a civil society,? Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement Wednesday. ?He has accepted responsibility for his words and his actions. He has been fined for this incident.?

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick said that he has forgiven Cooper for what he said, but Vick?s brother Marcus threatened to put a $1,000 bounty on Cooper?s head if another player laid him out. Marcus Vick made the threat on Twitter, then took his Twitter account offline.

NVIDIA Shield review

DNP NVIDIA Shield review it's almost like NVIDIA thinks it's Razer or something TKTK

NVIDIA Shield is a truly strange device. It combines an eight-button console-size gamepad with dual analog sticks, and a 5-inch "multi-touch, retinal" screen. It runs stock Android 4.2.1. It touts wireless PC game streaming as its main selling point. It plays Android games, it plays PC games, it does the Twitter and the Gmail, et cetera. With Shield, NVIDIA is aiming to be the Swiss Army Knife of handheld game consoles. It slices! It dices! ShamWOW!

It also costs $300, weighs nearly 1.5 pounds and takes up quite a bit of bag space. Its main selling point -- PC game streaming -- is dependent on the user already owning a PC with a relatively fancy ($140) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 GPU or better. Let's be honest, though: you already know this stuff, right? If you're reading this review, you either already own all the necessary gear and wanna know if this is a worthwhile peripheral for your PC, or you're morbidly curious about NVIDIA's (admittedly bizarre) console experiment. Let's all head below and try to find satisfaction.
